People In Music History
Machaut, Guillaume de [also Machault] (ca. 1300-1377) French composer, also
poet and priest, latterly Canon of Rheims. Considered the chief exponent of Ars
nova in France. His Mass for 4 voices is almost the earliest surviving
polyphonic mass. Composed also other vocal music to religious and secular
texts, some to a very intricate scheme of construction (See Isorhythmic, a term
applying to some of his work).
